MY PRACTICE
Sculpture sits at the centre of my practice. I'm interested in the way a physical object can carry emotion, memory and meaning, whilst existing in the same space as the viewer. The physical presence allows the work to feel more immediate and open to interpretation. My interest in sculpture was developed through studying historical works and recognising how material can carry deeply human experiences. Seeing how gesture and form could suggest something emotional or psychological made me realise that sculpture was the language I wanted to work in.
The starting point for much of my work is internal. A feeling, memory often becomes the beginning of a series. Rather than illustrating these experiences, I explore how they might emerge through form and material. Clay is usually where the work begins. Its immediacy allows me to respond instinctively through touch and gesture. Recently I have expanded into materials such as plaster and concrete. These materials introduce an element of unpredictability, and I'm increasingly interested in allowing them to influence the direction of the work rather than trying to control the outcome.
I often work in series, allowing ideas to evolve overtime through repetition, adaptation and variation. Each body of work becomes a period of exploration where forms slowly shift and develop through the act of making. My studio itself is rarely orderly. It's an active, often chaotic environment where experimentation and uncertainty are part of the process. Working directly with my hands remain essential, allowing a conversation between the body, the material and the emerging form.
Themes of memory, emotion and acceptance run throughout the work. The sculptures are not intended to offer clear explanations. Instead they open a space for reflection, where viewers can bring their own interpretations and experiences. For me, sculpture becomes a way of holding experiences that are difficult to articulate in words. The work exists somewhere between the emotional and the physical, a quiet attempt to give form to things that might otherwise remain unseen.
